INSOMNIA
by
Beverly Jackson
When
new to the world, you sleep like a baby
and languish in beds, entwined like eels
as youth and love hold you spent.
Sleep gradually falls away
like beauty, and lust, and hope--
there's
a narrowing down in life,
less patience for lies,
less interest in fluff
but as it all skinnies up,
the darkness of night
seems to lengthen,
the
realm of possibilities broadens
and the entire universe of death
is born like a new world
just behind eyes
that will not stay shut.
